Turntable Tips

There are tips on how to add a turntable to a stereo system. Get your hands on the turntable in one of numerous ways. Ask your parents or friends if they have an old turntable that they could sell with a low price or you could shop for used or new turntables online or at local electronic dealers. Try to buy a turntable that has built-in pre-amplifier.

Plug the 2 output cables into the stereo receiver’s input terminals or AUX. If you do not have those terminals, use another input including TAPE or TV. Switch the receiver input to setting that you connected the turntable.

Place the record on the turntable. Turn the power on for the receiver as well as the turntable and then cue up the stylus. If the record plays with sufficient sound and volume quality, your turntable and stereo are set. Otherwise, you have to add the phono pre-amplifier.

Shop around for a phono pre-amplifier if your record is not playing with enough volume. Phono pre-amplifiers are available at record and music stores, several electronic dealers and on Internet sites. The Phono pre-amplifier’s price ranges from 30 US dollars to more than 10,000 US dollars for disc jockey systems. You cannot be content with the lowest-priced unit, so be prepared to spend about 70 US dollars to 100 US dollars.

Plug output cables in the input receptacles on phono pre-amplifier. Plug also output cables from the phono pre-amplifier into AUX input receptacles. Power up the stereo system and play a record.

Home Crafts-Taking your Favorite Old Record Albums and Showing Them Off

A lot of us still remember the days of playing our favorite vinyl record albums on a turntable, and can recall the anticipation of bringing that album home from the record store to give it a spin and play our radio favorite again and again.  Here is a classic way to resurrect one or two of those old record albums and show them off in an artsy way and protect them at the same time.

I was inspired to create this decorating project when I came across an album shaped hanging frame with a glass cover to protect the front of the album jacket.  That of course is the part that holds the record itself.  The frame was designed to display album covers on a wall as decorative art.  Throughout the decades of modern music as we know it, specifically the time period from the psychedelic 60s to the present time, the design and artwork that would go in to an album jacket cover, and the more current CD covers, at times has resulted in phenomenal and historically significant art.  So, when I discovered this frame designed to show off some of those more artsy album covers, I was immediately drawn to the idea and started to make a list of the old albums I had that might work well displayed on my walls.

Then, like that proverbial light bulb flashing over my head, I had a revolutionary idea that had me jumping through the ceiling with excitement.  What if I took an old record album or two, great musically speaking, but lacking in artistic interpretation on the cover, and used that same frame I found to display the vinyl record itself.   Of course you’re asking me, “What is so original about that idea?”  Well, pull up a chair and I’ll show you how to make that dark vinyl disc a work of art.

First let us look at the supplies you will need for this attention drawing project:

Square album frame with glass cover: (12 ¼” X 12 ¼”); An album, without the jacket cover Scrapbooking theme paper, theme wrapping paper, or any artistic paper that projects the message or theme of the album itself. Thicker cardboard cut in to the square dimensions of your frame (this should match the shape given above that is intended for an album cover to fit inside) Adhesive glue stick or artist spray adhesive

To put this framed art project together, you are simply taking an old record album and showing it off on your wall in the same way that music artists are awarded once their recordings reach a certain level of sales.  Whereas their successfully selling record albums are represented in gold or platinum, our framed records will be the actual albums themselves with a decorative theme border surrounding them.

Step 1:  You may have a square piece of the thick cardboard included with your frame.  However, if you do not, just cut a square piece of cardboard in the dimensions listed above from an ordinary cardboard box.  Test fit the cardboard inside the frame before going any further.  Once you have a fit, set your cardboard on a flat surface safe for cutting upon.  Now, take your album of choice, and place it exactly in the center.  A perfect way to find the true center is to first measure your square and make a pen mark at that point.  Then, simply lay the album over the cardboard and line up the hole in the middle of the album with that pen mark.  Bet the inventor of the record album never realized the center hole had a dual purpose, did he?  Once you have marked your place, take a sharp utility blade and slowly score the cardboard along the circular edge of the album.  Once complete, remove the album and cut completely through your scored cardboard to remove the inner circle.  You are now ready for the next step.

Step 2:   You will now want to take your scrapbooking paper or wrapping paper of choice, and cover your cardboard using an adhesive glue stick.  Make sure the paper is flat against the cardboard without any bubbles, and then cut out the center circular portion where the album itself will be inserted.  Once the paper is dry, place it inside the album frame, insert your album, and place the protective backing that came with the frame back in place.

That is it!  Your artsy framed old record album is ready to be hung on the wall and admired.  Have fun with it.

Vinyl Records- A Different Perspective

As we continue to see the sales of CDs fall, it is obvious that the distribution channels of music are changing. But there is no disputing that digital downloads are the new “norm” for many people to acquire their music, be it one ninety-nine cent download or an entire album. As I ponder these changes, I still think that the vinyl record, as prehistoric as it is, is gaining popularity as well as making new fans and believers that this is the best audio format that can be heard.

As a vinyl lover, I am pretty set in my ways; no one has to convince me of the staying power and musical greatness of the vinyl record. So I was thrilled when I had a chance to interview a young man who shares the same views as I do.

I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with a nineteen-year old vinyl lover from Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada named Steve Robertson; who was gracious enough to share his thoughts and views about this old, yet treasured format. What follows is a short discussion with Steve as he shared his passion and love for vinyl records.

I asked Steve what drew him to vinyl, why does he prefer this audio format?

”Vinyl just sounds so much better; it has a unique sound that can’t be duplicated. There is a feeling of satisfaction when actually holding a physical product. And the cover art, not only from the past, but from new artists, is another reason I prefer vinyl records over any other format. I also get a sense of satisfaction in knowing that when I buy an artist’s work on vinyl, that I am supporting the musicians who release it, it just isn’t another free download,” explained Steve.

I asked Steve how long he has listened to vinyl and about what format his friends prefer.

”I have been into vinyl for several years now and vinyl is huge in British Columbia and most of my friends prefer it as well. We both like the clear sound and experience you get when playing a record. And we are interested in DJ-ing, so it fits right in. Last year I purchased a pair of Stanton turntables that have certainly helped me in my DJ-ing efforts and I plan on upgrading very soon to take it to the next level. I love the control that I have playing the music that people want to hear. The goal of a DJ is to take two different songs and blend them together in a smooth seamless way without the crowd knowing. Taking elements of one record and blending them into the other, you can then skillfully mix out the first song until it is just the new track playing. It’s like creating a new song and new music in a way. You make sure to keep up a steady stream, a continuous flow of ups and downs, it’s like telling a story, you want to keep people intrigued and interested in the music,” said Steve.

”I really think that vinyl is coming back, it sure is in our area. If my friends and I had to pick, records would be our choice and the best option to hear our music. But, they are harder to acquire, our nearest vinyl shop is an hour and a half away, so we buy most of our vinyl online.”

I asked Steve about his vinyl record collection and wanted to hear more details about his passion for D J-ing.

”To the first part of your question, I would say that I have over three hundred records, mostly classic rock like Zeppelin or Heart. But I have about seventy-five records that would fall into the electronic dance genre. That is mostly what I play when I DJ because that is what the crowd I play for wants to hear. When you’re mixing records, the control you have over the sound and the way you can manipulate the music is just like playing an instrument. You can blend and put effects on the music using your mixer or you can do some hands on scratching and add your own unique sound to it. As far as scratching goes, it’s a whole new level of DJ’ing because, in a way you are creating a sound that has never been heard before, it’s almost like live production,” explained Steve.

It was certainly refreshing to listen to Steve speak about his love for vinyl records. His enthusiasm for the format was clearly evident and especially welcome to me, a vinyl purist. And we both agreed that whatever musical genre it is that you enjoy, it certainly sounds the best emanating from a vinyl record. And that is a perspective that will help the vinyl record survive, if not thrive.

I want to personally thank Steve for his cooperation and candor in regards to our discussion about vinyl records. It is nice to hear someone from a different generation, not only passionate about the music that he listens to, but about the audio format that he chooses to listen to his music.
